REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Self Portrait Frowning: Bust.

Etching, 1630. 71x60 mm; 2 7/8x2 3/8 inches. Biörklund's third state (of 3), though with traces of the 2 parallel horizontal lines printing above the head; Usticke's second state (of 2); White and Boon's third state (of 3). Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark. A very good, well-inked impression of this extremely scarce print, with all the fine, delicate lines printing clearly.

According to Usticke, "A very scarce portrait, rarely fine (RR-)." We have found only 8 other impressions at auction in the past 20 years. The last impression sold at Swann, May 1, 2008, sale 2144, lot 48 (also trimmed inside the plate mark). Bartsch 10; Biörklund 30-M; Hollstein (White and Boon) 10.
