REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Self Portrait in a Velvet Cap and Plume.

Etching, 1638. 135x105 mm; 5 1/4x4 1/8 inches. Biörklund's third state (of 3); Usticke's second state (e) (of 3), with the diagonal scratch in the upper left corner printing clearly; White and Boon's third state (of 3). Basel crozier watermark (Ash/Fletcher 11 B'.a., which they date to Amsterdam around 1646). With thread margins or trimmed on the plate mark. A superb, richly-inked and clearly-printed impression with the signature upper left and all the delicate lines showing clearly, with no wear in even the most densely cross-hatched areas and with strong contrasts.
