REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Self Portrait with Curly Hair and White Collar: Bust.

Etching, circa 1630. 58x50 mm; 2 3/8x1 7/8 inches, narrow to thread margins. Usticke's only state (e); New Hollstein's second state (of 2), with the rough plate edges mostly smoothened. A very good, dark and strong impression of this usually grayish print, with strong contrasts and little to no sign of wear in the most densely cross-hatched shading on the torso, consistent with the earliest impressions of this subject.

According to Usticke, "A very rare, attractive self portrait; nearly always pale and indistinct (RRR+)." We have found fewer than 10 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years.

Provenance: Nicolas Vassiliévitch Basnine, with the ink stamp (Lugt 1960, verso).

Bartsch 1; Biörklund 30-11; Hollstein (White and Boon) 1; New Hollstein 66.
