REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Self Portrait with Long, Bushy Hair: Head only.

Etching, circa 1631. 65x62 mm; 2 3/4x2 1/2 inches, thread margins. Biörklund's fourth state (of 6), after the reduction of the plate; Usticke's fourth state (of 7); White and Boon's fourth state (of 7). A very good, dark and well-inked impression of this extremely scarce, early etching with strong contrasts and no sign of wear.

We have found only 6 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. The most recent impression, a slightly lighter impression than the current work, sold at Swann, May 2, 2017, sale 2445, lot 113 ($42,500).

According to Usticke, "A very rare, small portrait, always delicate, before the heavy rerworking in the late states." Bartsch 8; Biörklund 31-9; Hollstein (White and Boon) 8.
