REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
St. Jerome in a Dark Chamber.

Etching and drypoint, 1642. 149x170 mm; 5 7/8x6 3/4 inches, small margins. Biörklund's second state (of 2); Usticke's second state (e) (of 5), with the lion's tail at the feet of St. Jerome distinct; White and Boon's second state (of 2). Basilisk watermark (Ash/Fletcher 12, which is found most often on lifetime impressions of plates dating from 1638 to 1647). Ex-collection Friedrich Quiring (Lugt supplement 1041c, verso). A superb, luminous and richly-inked impression with burr on the signature, with all the subtle tonal variations and elements of the composition showing clearly and with the Saint beautifully highlighted by the rays streaming through the window panes. Bartsch 105; Biörklund 42-E; Hollstein (White and Boon) 105.
