REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
St. Jerome in a Dark Chamber.

Etching and drypoint, 1642. 149x170 mm; 5 7/8x6 3/4 inches, narrow margins. Biörklund's second state (of 2); Usticke's second state (of 5); New Hollstein second state (of 3). The name "OCTUIER" counter mark to a Seven Provinces watermark (Hinterding, Misc. B, volume II, page 238). A superb, luminous and richly-inked impression, with all the subtle tonal variations and elements of the composition showing clearly and with the Saint barely highlighted by the rays streaming through the window panes, consistent with the earliest impressions of this subject. Bartsch 105; Biörklund 42-E; Hollstein (White and Boon) 105.
