Studies of the Heads of Saskia and Others.

Etching, 1636. 153x125 mm; 6x4 7/8 inches, thread margins. Usticke's first state (of 2), before the horizontal scratches between the head of the man with the turban and Saskia's head. Crowned, single-headed eagle watermark (Ash/Fletcher 17 A.a.; Hinterding A.a.a.; both note a similar watermark on the impression of this subject in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). Ex-collection George Hibbert (Lugt 2849, verso); William Esdaile (Lugt 2617, lower right recto; sold Christie's London, June 15, 1840, lot 881); B. van der Kolk (see Lugt 1582); and Ch. Jacquin (Lugt 1397a, verso). A brilliant, richly-inked and early impression with all the fine lines distinct and with no sign of wear, consistent with the earliuest impressions of this subject. Bartsch 365; Biörklund 36-B; Hollstein (White and Boon) 365.
