REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Baptism of the Eunuch.

Etching and drypoint, 1641. 183x214 mm; 7 1/4x8 1/2 inches, narrow to thread margins. Biörklund's second state (of 2); Usticke's second state (e) (of 4), before the Basan editions; White and Boon's second state (of 2); New Hollstein second state (of 4), before the additional work lower left and the long, accidental vertical scratch to the right of St. Philip's head. Basilisk watermark with the initials "RP" (Ash/Fletcher 12A.a, which they date to circa 1630 and note for early impressions of Rembrandt's etchings). A superb impression with strong contrasts, with all the details distinct and with traces of burr in the foliage and foreground, consistent with the earliest impressions of this subject. Bartsch 98; Biörklund 41-E; Hollstein (White and Boon) 98.
