REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Death of the Virgin.

Etching and drypoint, 1639. 397x317 mm; 15 3/4x12 1/2 inches, narrow margins. Biörklund's third state (of 4), before the fine vertical shading on the bedpost (which was probably added around 1760-85); Usticke's third state (of 5); White and Boon's second state (of 3). Horse and Rider watermark (Hinterding p. 52; Ash/Fletcher 23, which they date to around 1658-1667 and cite on an impression of Christ Healing the Sick (The Hundred Guilder Print), circa 1649, at the Cincinnati Art Museum). A superb, evenly-printed impression of this large etching with strong contrasts and little to no sign of wear. Bartsch 99; Biörklund 39-A; Hollstein (White and Boon) 99.
