REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Descent from the Cross: Second Plate.

Etching and engraving, 1633. 528x407 mm; 20 3/4x16 1/8 inches, narrow margins. Biörklund's second state (of 5), before the address of Uylenburgh lower right; Usticke's first state (of 5); White and Boon's second state (of 5). Ex-collection T. J. Thompson (Lugt 2442, verso; this impression cited in Lugt, sold at Phillips, London, January 18-19, 1849, £15 15 shillings); and Alfred Morrison (Lugt 144, verso). A superb, dark and richly-inked impression of this large print, with strong contrasts and no signs of wear, consistent with the earliest impressions of this subject. Bartsch 81; Biörklund 33-C; Hollstein (White and Boon) 81.
