REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Descent from the Cross: Second Plate.

Etching and engraving, 1633. 528x407 mm; 20 3/4x16 1/8 inches, narrow to thread margins. Biörklund's second state (of 5), before the address of Uylenburgh lower right; Usticke's first state (of 5); New Hollstein fourth-fifth state (of 8). Strasburg Lily with Pendant Letter A watermark (Ash/Fletcher 36, which they date to Amsterdam from the first half of the 1600s; there are two impressions of this subject, also in the second state, with similar watermarks, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). Ex-collection Alfred Seymour (Lugt 176, verso); and unknown collector, initials "JAK" in brown ink, verso (not in Lugt). A superb, dark and richly-inked impression of this large etching, with strong contrasts and no signs of wear, consistent with the earliest impressions of this subject. Bartsch 81; Biörklund 33-C; Hollstein (White and Boon) 81.
