REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Descent from the Cross: second plate.

Etching and engraving, 1633. 530x413 mm; 21x161/4 inches, small margins. Biörklund's third state (of 5), with the address of Ulenburch in the lower margin; Usticke's second state (e) (of 5); White and Boon's third state (of 5). Ex-collection the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard (Lugt 936, verso). Soft horizontal fold visible mainly on the verso, with a repaired associated split at the left sheet edge to just above the left edge of the tower at the left, backed with thin laid paper. A superb, luminous impression of this large, early print, with all the details, including the faces of the men on the ladders printing clearly.

The publisher Ulenburch was Saskia's (Rembrandt's wife) cousin. Bartsch 81; Biörklund 33-C; Hollstein (White and Boon) 81.
