REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Flight into Egypt: Altered from Seghers.

Etching, engraving and drypoint, circa 1653. 208x281 mm; 8 1/4x11 1/8 inches. Biörklund's sixth state (of 7); Usticke's second state (e) (of 2), with the vertical line and the marks in the sky very distinct; White and Boon's sixth state (of 7). Strasburg Lily watermark (Ash/Fletcher 36 A.4WR:b; the same watermark is on the impression of this subject in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print, with significant burr on the figures, foliage and landscape at the right and with Seghers' landscape at the left printed with great clarity overall.

We have found only 9 other impressions at auction in the past 25 years; the most recent impression sold at Swann, April 27, 2010, auction 2212, lot 118. Bartsch 56; Biörklund 53-2; Hollstein (White and Boon) 56.
