REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Flight into Egypt: Altered from Seghers.

Etching, engraving and drypoint, circa 1653. 216x282 mm; 8 1/2x11 1/8 inches, narrow margins. Biörklund's sixth state (of 7); Usticke's second state (e) (of 2), with the vertical line and the marks in the sky very distinct; White and Boon's sixth state (of 7). Indistinct circular watermark with letter and WR counter mark. Ex-collection Heneage Finch, Earl of Aylesford (Lugt 58, verso; Lugt notes that, according to the art historian Josi, Finch's Rembrandts were acquired from the Jan Six, Röver and Ploos van Amstel collections); August Artaria (Lugt 33, verso); and unknown collector (Lugt 824, verso). A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print, with significant burr throughout the figures, foliage and landscape at the right.

We have found only 8 other impressions at auction in the past 20 years. Bartsch 56; Biörklund 53-2; Hollstein (White and Boon) 56.
