REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Raising of Lazarus: The Larger Plate.

Etching, engraving and drypoint, circa 1632. 360x253 mm; 14 1/4x10 inches. Biörklund's seventh state (of 9); Usticke's third state (of 10); White and Boon's eighth state (of 10), before any rework. Strasburg Lily with the letters WR watermark (Hinterding "a" p. 197; Ash/Fletcher 36 A c; Ash/Fletcher cite an impression of the the same subject in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with an identical watermark). Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark. A very good, dark and evenly-printed impression with strong contrasts and very little to no wear, with the short horizontal line in drypoint on the hat of the man beneath the outstretched hand of the standing man.

Hinterding has ascertained at least 8 different printings of this state (the last lifetime state) over a 10-year period of Rembrandt's career. According to Usticke, his third state of this subject is "the earliest state now seen in commerce." Bartsch 73; Biörklund 32-4; Hollstein (White and Boon) 73.
