REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Ship of Fortune.

Etching, 1633. 117x169 mm; 4 5/8x6 5/8 inches, narrow to thread margins. Biörklund's second state (of 2), after the reduction of the plate; Usticke's first state (e) (of 1); White and Boon's second state (of 2). Ex-collection Lessing Julius Rosenwald (Lugt 1760b, verso). A superb, well-inked impression with very strong contrasts and no sign of wear.

According to Usticke, "scarce" (R). Early impressions such as this, before publication in Herckmans, Der Zeewaert Lof, Amsterdam, 1634, are extremely scarce (there is printed text on the verso of the impressions published in the book). Bartsch 111; Biörklund 33-E; Hollstein (White and Boon) 111.
