Etching and drypoint, circa 1644. 79x58 mm; 3 1/4x2 1/4 inches, narrow margins. Usticke's only state (e), with the fine vertical lines on the young man's forehead distinct. A superb, dark, early impression, with burr in the shading between the woman and the herdsman, on the herdsman's left leg and in the background behind the herdsman.

Provenance: The Albertina, Vienna (Lugt 5g, verso); Kennedy Galleries, Inc., New York, with their stock number in pencil, verso.

According to Usticke, "A rare little plate (RR+)." We have found fewer than seven other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Bartsch 189; Biörklund 44-1; Hollstein (White and Boon) 189.
