REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Small Lion Hunt.

Etching and drypoint, circa 1641. 155x123 mm; 6 1/8x4 7/8 inches, narrow margins. Biörklund's second state (of 2); Usticke's second state (e) (of 2); White and Boon's second state (of 2). Follscap with a 5-pointed collar watermark (Ash/Fletcher 19 I. a.; the identical watermark is on the impression of this subject in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). Ex-collection Peter Gellatly (Lugt 1185, verso); Gottfried Eissler (Lugt supplement 805, verso); and Carl Hirschler (Lugt supplement 633a, verso). A superb, early impression of this scarce etching, with the fine drypoint lines throughout the background printing clearly, with the delicate horizontal lines on the lion's front right paw distinct and with touches of burr. Bartsch 115; Biörklund 41-3; Hollstein (White and Boon) 115.
