Etching and drypoint, circa 1641. 163x213 mm; 5 1/2x8 1/2 inches, small margins. Usticke's first state (e) (of 2), before the addition of aquatint. Ex-collection unknown collector, ink stamp verso. A superb, well-inked impression with abumdant burr on and around the kneeling figure lower left, on the standing figure, on the horse's head, on Mordecai's chest and cap and in the cross-hatching upper left, with all the delicate details details and with no sign of wear, consistent with the earliest impressions of this subject.
According to Schapelhouman, "In spite of its modest dimensions, the Triumph of Mordecai exploits the scope of printmaking to an astonishing degree. It is as if Rembrandt wanted to exhibit the enitre spectrum of his technique, from the airiest etched lines in the crowd on the right to the inkiest blacks in the drypoint areas around the superb figure kneeling in the left foreground," (Rembrandt the Printmaker, London, 200, page 196).
