REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
The Triumph of Mordecai.

Etching and drypoint, circa 1641. 163x213 mm; 5 1/2x8 1/2 inches, narrow margins. Usticke's first state (of 3), before the addition of aquatint. Arms of Regensberg with the initials JS watermark (Ash/Fletcher 8 A a, which they cite for this print; Heawood 3936, which he dates to circa 1646). Ex-collection P. von Baldinger-Seidenberg (Lugt 212, verso). A brilliant, early impression with rich, velvety burr overall, notably on and around the kneeling figure lower left, on the horse's bridle and on the beard of the man standing in front of the horse, and with the densest area of cross-hatching in the upper left printing strongly. Bartsch 40; Biörklund 41-1; Hollstein (White and Boon) 40.
