REMBRANDT VAN RIJN
Young Man in a Velvet Cap (Petrus Sylvius ?).

Etching, 1637. 96x83 mm; 3 3/4x3 1/4 inches, thread margins. Biörklund's second state (of 2); White and Boon's second state (of 2); New Hollstein's second state (of 2), with the delicate second outline on the upper right hand side of the cap and most of the dotted shading on the sitter's left cheek removed. A very good, early impression of this scarce etching, with strong contrasts.

According to Hinterding, "An impression [of this subject] exists of state II in Lausanne with an inscriptionin pen and brown ink on the verso in a 17th century hand: Petrús Silviús [the preacher and first cousin of Rembrandt's wife Saskia]. However, the identification of the sitter is not certain. Other names have been suggested: Ferdinand Bol, Gerard Dou and Johannes van Vliet." Bartsch 268; Biörklund 37-C; Hollstein (White and Boon) 268; New Hollstein 164.
