"How goes the stretcher - write me about it. I signed the patent papers and sent them to Bourne patent atty - from Key West some time ago. Did not like the navy and that d[amn] old Long fired all the correspondents. Am here waiting for the army to embark for Cuba. Its d[amn] hard waiting but that line of old ladies up in Washington who are trying to run the Govt are swiftly ridiculous old things: One can't criticise them any more than one can a dog for shiting on the front steps - they are not serious - they are ridiculous. Old Dewey did a thing in the Phillipines I think Americans are d[amn] good sports if the bloody stinking old politicians would launch them loose. Never mind we will get even with the 'poleys' some day - Make so we can cut all their heads off."
