RENÉ PIOT. "Iskender." Costume design for Fedor Bekefi in Paul Dukas's one act ballet La Péri, which premiered at Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, on April 22, 1912. Graphite, watercolor, and pastel on two joined sheets of paper. 934x458 mm; 36 3/4x18 inches. Artist's stamp in lower right image. Taped to matte along top edge, verso. Framed to 44x26 inches. Provenance: Ex-collection William Emboden.
Dukas originally scored La Péri, his last work, in 1911, for the Ballet Russes, with costumes by Léon Bakst and featuring dancers Natalia Trouhanova as Peri and Nijinsky as Iskender. The production was canceled when Serge Diaghilev deemed Trouhanova too weak of a dancer against Nijinsky. Undeterred, she commissioned Ivan Clustine to choreograph the music and Piot to design sets and costumes for this production, where she danced the title role against Bekefi as Iskender.
