RENÉ VINCENT (1879-1936)

BUGATTI. 1930.

55x39½ inches, 139¾x100¼ cm. Joseph Charles, Paris.
Condition B-: white background extensively overpainted with large replaced losses; repaired tears, replaced losses and creases in text and image. Framed.

Vincent "specialized in elegant automobile advertising. He set the standard for snob appeal in poster art during this era, which was known for sleek cars, elegant women, and an abundance of refined taste." Vincent was also one of the first French citizens to have a driver's license and was one of the first Parisians to have a garage built onto his house (Crouse p. 54). He "simply displays this Bugatti Type 46, with its bumblebee hubcaps and an elegant occupant, against an uncluttered background, allowing the vehicle to entice the public essentially unassisted" (ibid.).
