RENE PEAN (1875-1940) LE CHIEN DU REGIMENT. Circa 1900.
48 3/4x34 1/2 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition A-: minor restoration in margins, corners and image.
Rene Pean was a student and a close follower of Cheret. They worked together at the Chaix printing firm and many of Pean's images bear a striking resemblance to Cheret's work in drawing style, coloring and even lettering. Pean created a number of posters for different types of clients, ranging from cabaret and theater to tourism and department stores. Here, for a long forgotten comic opera, "The Dog of the Regiment", he shows a group of 18th century soldiers enjoying the performance of a black dog. Most likely their mascot, this comedic canine is standing upright on a drum, wearing a soldier's hat and carrying a toy gun. The dog's trainer, lending the prerequisite dose of Cheret-style sex appeal, is the sensuous canteen woman.
