RENÉ GRUAU (RENATO DE ZAVAGLI 1910-2004) L'IMPERMÉABLE MODERNE C'EST BLIZZAND. 1965.
61 1/4x45 inches, 155x114 cm. Bedos & Cie., Paris.
Condition A- / B+: repaired tears in margins.
Gruau was the most talented and celebrated fashion illustrator in France after the war. He produced many works for Dior, and posters for the Lido and Moulin Rouge. His busy, detailed and extravagant images reflect his talent and his vision. Thus this image for Blizzand raincoats really sticks out as a brilliant exercise in minimalism, using in flat tones and broad strokes. The poster is not just elegant in its simplicity, it as also a masterpiece of design, using the white of the paper to such an enormous, effective extent. Very rare in this large format. Weill 535, Gruau p. 92.
