RENÉ MAGRITTE (1898-1967) SECOND FILM AND FINE ARTS WORLD FESTIVAL OF BELGIUM. 1949.
47 3/4x30 1/2 inches, 121 1/4x77 1/2 cm. O. de Rycker, S.A., Brussels.
Condition A: abrasions in image.
Known as one of the world's most important surrealist painters, Magritte also spent a large part of his life working in advertising, both to help sustain himself during lean times, and out of an interest in publicity. Toward the end of his life when money was no longer a problem, he designed a poster for Sabena airlines depicting a bird filled with a cloudy sky. In this poster for a film festival in Brussels, in his recognizable style, he uses the forehead of a woman as a movie screen. From 1942 to 1944, Magritte did a number of ads for a perfume company called Provence with a lady's face treated in the same style. Magritte used this same image in 1947.
