Richard Avedon began working for Harper's Bazaar in the late 1940s. Avedon was less concerned with the industry his subjects were in and more interested in capturing the true essence and soul of whomever happened to be in front of his camera lens. In this instance, of an actress playing a role, he heightens the impact of the emotions even more by using the red and blue background. The image was also used on the album cover for the production. A very early, atypical commercial work by Avedon.
