RICHARD BECK (DATES UNKNOWN) ORIENT LINE CRUISES. 1937.
40x25 inches.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins; creases in margins and image.
Other than having a studio in London and having designed a handful of progressive posters for the Orient Line, very little is known about Beck. Tom Purvis, in his very selective book, Poster Progress, reproduces three of Beck's images for this shipping company and states "the posters on this page show a distinct trend in poster design. The artists assemble material, combining photography and drawn design in some novel or striking arrangement. Richard Beck, with training in German Experimentalism, is successful in this method." (Poster Progress p. 93). This photomontage, within and around strong geometric forms, is a perfect example of Beck's style.
