New York's Cardinal O'Connor, (Archbishop from 1984-2000) was staunchly anti-condom, thus anti-safe sex. His stance on not using condoms to help prevent the spread of AIDS evoked the wrath of gay activist groups, which culminated in ACT UP's "Stop the Church" demonstration in December 1989.
