Diebenkorn (1922-1993) adopted Abstract Expressionism in the late 1940s/early 1950s, influenced by Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning and Clyfford Still. He later created more representational works--such as this still life and a handful of female figural studies. By the late 1960s, Diebenkorn had combined Abstract Expressionism with an accute appreciation of the figural and color work of Henri Matisse, developing his own distinct abstract style, at once more geometric and less gestural than his earlier work.
