RICHARD DIEBENKORN Cup, Saucer, Fork and Knife.
Color lithograph on wove paper, 1965. 280x280 mm; 11x11 inches, full margins. Initialed, dated and numbered 33/50 in pencil, lower margin. Printed and published by Original Press, San Francisco, with the blind stamp lower right. A superb impression of this very scarce, early lithograph.
Diebenkorn (1922-1993) adopted Abstract Expressionism in the late 1940s/early 1950s, influenced by Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning and Clyfford Still. He later created more representational works--such as this still life and a handful of female figural studies. By the late 1960s, Diebenkorn had combined Abstract Expressionism with an accute appreciation of the figural and color work of Henri Matisse, developing his own distinct abstract style, at once more geometric and less gestural than his earlier work.
