The Dakota was built in the 1880s by the same architect as the Plaza Hotel. At the time of its construction, 72nd Street was so far north in the city that it was likened to Dakota Territory. At the time of its opening, a 10-room apartment was rented for $250! Its residents have included Judy Garland, Leonard Bernstein and John Lennon.
