RICHARD HAMILTON (1922- ) "JUST WHAT IS IT...?" 1976.
30x20 inches.
Condition B+: creases in image; pinholes in corners; minor tears and discoloration in margins. Paper.
A master of the collage and photomontage, Richard Hamilton was a member of the Independant Group who, in the early fifties, analysed the products of mass culture. His 1956 collage "Just what makes today's homes so different, so appealing?", made as the design for the Whitechapel Art Gallery "This is Tomorrow" exhibition poster is now recognised as one of the earliest pop art works. It is indeed a crazy, ironic image that has lost nothing of it's power. Twenty years later, it was re-used for this exhibition, organised by the Arts Council celebrating pop art in England from 1947 to 1963. A good document.
