RICHARD HARDMEYER (1876-1919) WASCHANSTALT ZURICH. 1915.
50 1/4x35 5/8 inches. Anstalt E. Wolfensberger, Zurich.
Condition B+: repaired tear in margins and image.
Hardmeyer died of the Spanish Flu epidemic that swept Europe in 1919. Later this image became known as the first modern Swiss poster. In The Swiss Poster, Bruno Margadant explains that Hardmeyer first drew the image of a rooster wearing a shirt in 1904. In 1905 (before the age of the standard Swiss poster format), Wolfensberger, the famous Swiss printer, added the black and yellow background and issued the image as a mono card. Ten years later, Waschanstalt ordered a poster from the printer and they adapted the image to fit the new format. The result is a great, bold, modernist poster that remains an historical Swiss image. This is the first printing. Swiss Poster 55, Weill 121, Realisme 1.
