RICHARD MAYHEW (1924 - )
New Hampshire Valley.

Oil on linen canvas, circa 1960. 635x1016 mm; 25x40 inches, Signed in oil, lower right.

Provenance: Robert Isaacson, New York, with a handwritten note attached to frame back and on the stretcher bars; private collection, Atlanta.

The Robert Isaacson gallery represented Richard Mayhew in the late 1950s through the early 1960s, giving him four solo exhibitions. Although the Robert Isaacson Gallery represented the estate of Elie Nadelman and championed Magic Realist painters, Isaacson's main interest was nineteenth century academic painting. Richard Mayhew's singular focus on landscape and his affinity with Impressionism made the artist a good fit.

This beautiful and verdant canvas by Richard Mayhew is one of the earliest paintings by the artist we have handled. His atmospheric 1960s and early 1970s landscapes have a rich palette that is much earthier and darker than the high key colors found in his more contemporary paintings.
