RICHARD PRINCE
Beamsize.

Pencil and paper collage on cream wove Arches paper, 1974. 375x285 mm; 14 3/4x11 1/4 inches. Signed, titled, dated and dedicated in pencil, lower margin. Ex-collection Bevan Davies, a gift from the artist.

A scarce, early work, and a precursor of Prince's use of appropriated photographs. Following his academic training at Nasson College in Maine, Prince was drawn to New York during the mid-1970s. Among his early jobs in New York was a stint at The New York Times Magazine tear sheets department, where he pored over pages containing the advertising images he would later use in rephotographic works of the late 1970s and 1980s. His first solo exhibition took place at Ellen Sragow Gallery, New York, in March 1976.
