RICHARD RUMMEL (1848-1924)

FRENCH LINE "FRANCE" / [NEW YORK HARBOR]. Circa 1920.

26 1/2x40 1/2 inches, 67 1/4x102 3/4 cm. Albert J. Leon, New York.
Condition B+: repaired tears and small replaced losses at edges; minor creases and abrasions at edges and in image; margins trimmed to image; printed on textured paper. Framed.

The France took its maiden voyage in 1912, running between Le Havre and New York. The liner was pressed into military service during the First World War and returned to its commercial crossings in 1919. The ship, decommissioned in 1932, is depicted here between the small tugboats and ferries that populate New York harbor and the impressive background of lower Manhattan, with the prominent spires of the Woolworth, Singer, and Park Row Buildings all visible within the skyline.
