Richard Titlebaum's expansive body of work combined themes from surrealism, classical Greek literature and gay pride. He made drawings, watercolors and oils, producing dreamy landscapes or scenes inspired by ancient history and myth.

Titlebaum was a writer, artist, antiquarian book collector, and literature professor. He attended Boston Latin School and received a B.A. (1960) and M.A. from Harvard. In 1969 he received a doctorate in English literature from Harvard University, and taught literature at Harvard, and University of California, Berkeley, University of Haifa and at the University of the Witwatersrand.
