"Le Grand Tour," a European tradition for the upper classes since the 17th century, involved exploring the roots Western Civilization via art and sights from classical antiquity and the Rennaisance. From the middle of the 19th century, as photography became more and more prevalent, cameras become part of a traveler's requirements. Stores sprang up to cater to the market that could afford to travel. Winckel used a well-seasoned traveler, in an exotic setting, camera at hand, to represent Soennecken's typical customers. This is the rarer of two variants. DFP III 3442 (var) Voyage p, 190 (var).
