Born in Los Angeles, Herb Ritts started his career in photography in the late 1970s and quickly gained attention for the fashionable studies he created for Rolling Stone, Vogue, Vanity Fair and Interview magazines. His photographs for Versace, Armani, Pirelli, Chanel and Calvin Klein resulted in successful advertising campaigns.

His work is readily identifiable by his use of bold forms and graphic lines, which result in a pure and sensuous study of the human form. His classical works often depict his subjects as 21st century gods and goddesses.

Ritts photographed Madonna on various occasions. The photograph featured here was used on her third album True Blue in 1986. Pictures of Ritts indicate the picture was a favorite, occupying pride of place in his home environment. Ritts photographed all of his subjects in moments that are truthful and glamorous. His sense of impartiality helped to both show what the public thought of a celebrity while also nodding to their private lives.
