Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Robert Reid was an accomplished painter, illustrator and art educator. He studied at Clark College, Atlanta, Parsons School of Design, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago from 1941-1950. Reid worked as a fashion illustrator and taught fashion illustration, drawing and design at the Rhode Island School of Design. His first one-man show was held at Grand Central Moderns, New York in 1965. His exhibitions include the 1st World Festival of Negro Artists, Dakar, Senegal, 1965, the important exhibition Negro in American Art, UCLA Art Galleries, 1966, Arts in the American Embassies State Department Program, 1967, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Studio Museum in Harlem, 1968-69, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, 1971. Reid was represented by Alonzo Gallery in the 1970s and exhibited at June Kelly Gallery in the 1990s. His work is in the collections of the Museum of African Art in Washington, DC, the University of Notre Dame, Cornell University, Newark Museum, Syracuse University, University of Pennsylvania and Drew University.
