Robert Gage was the head Art Director of Doyle Dane Bernbach; his first major campaign was for Ohrbach's. In 1949, he was awarded an Art Director's Club medal for 'Design of Complete Unit in Newspapers.' He was praised for his Ohrbach ads' success in marketing low prices, but high quality; the result of his pre-opening campaign for the new store was such a rush of shoppers that the store had to close after ten minutes! Gage revolutionized the graphic relationship between text and design in his ads, and valued factual representation, rather than 'visual tricks' to draw in consumers. He ran recognizable film campaigns for Alka-Seltzer, Life Cereal, Polaroid, and Cracker Jack but he may be best known in the poster world for his iconic Levy's bread series.
