"'Lord Byron' was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in the mid-1960's, but the Met eventually pulled out of the deal. Juilliard students did the premiere in 1972 and their successors have revived it several times since." (New York Times, September 2, 1991). Indiana also designed the cover for the muscial score of the opera which was published in 1975.
This poster was published as part of the List art project which "got under way in 1961, when the List family foundation made a grant of $200,000 to New York's Lincoln Center to pay for well-known artists to design more elaborate posters than might otherwise have been used." (Time Magazine, August 16, 1968).
