Loughlin was well-known as a picker and dealer of mid-century furniture who sold to high-end interior designers and artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe and Jean-Michel Basquiat. He started painting his iconic "brute", the square-jawed man smoking a cigarette, in the early 1980's and used found objects such as furniture, textiles, boxes and even other artist's paintings as his canvases.
