ROBERT MALLET-STEVENS (1886-1945)

ST JEAN DE - LUZ. 1928.

62¼x46½ inches, 115x118 cm. H. Chachoin, Paris.
Condition A-: expertly-repaired tears at edges, some slightly into image; minor creases in margins and image.

"Robert Mallet-Stevens was France's most influential modernist architect between the wars. He designed the La Pergola casino complex in Saint-Jean-de Luz, the central feature of this poster" (Crouse p. 297). The solid planes of colors, apart from the gradated sky and pixel-like flower baskets on the expansive terrace, work with the curvilinear architecture to create an image that epitomizes modernism. Rare. Purchased at Swann in 2016, we could find no other copies at auction.

Crouse p. 296.
