Brush and ink on illustration board, 1944-45. 385x265 mm; 15¼x10½ inches. Signed, annotated and dated in ink, verso. Ex-collection Associated American Artists, New York, and Dr. Alexander Pearlman, Jamaica, New York. With a letter of authetication from Ilse G. Gerson, Marlborough-Gerson Gallery Inc., New York, dated October 7, 1965.

The current work relates to Motherwell's Personnage<>, etching, 1943-44, which was printed at Atelier 17, New York, under the direction of Stanley W. Hayter (Belknap, The Prints of Robert Motherwell<>, New York, 1980, cat. no. 2). According to William S. Lieberman, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in a letter which accompanies the lot, the drawing also relates to a painting and a watercolor from the same period now in 2 different private collections.
