According to Belknap, "Motherwell's [1915-1991] first painting in what later became known as the Open Series was done in early 1967. In 1969 fourteen huge paintings from this series were exhibited at Marlborough Gallery, New York." The current color lithograph is based on one of Motherwell's paintings from the Open Series.
