Additional Details

A nice example of this later state of Vaugondy's map of North America incorporating the name and boundaries of the newly established United States. Also added is an inset to the northwestern part of the continent containing several examples of mythical cartography such as the Northwest Passage, the River of the West and the establishment of Fou-Sang, believed by some to be the landing spot of ancient Chinese mariners in America. In this state, Vaugondy's designation as "Geographer du Roi" has been excised from the title cartouche following the execution of Louis XVI.
