ROBINSON AND CHERRILL (active 1868-1875)
The Beached Margent of the Sea. Albumen print, the image measuring 10 1/4x14
Provenance: Serge Kakou, Paris

The artistic and photographic partnership of Henry Peach Robinson (1830- ) and Nelson King Cherrill (1845- ) was briefly an immensely fruitful one. The Beached Margent of the Sea is considered a masterpiece, and is emblematic of their combination prints, which were highly praised at the time. A precursor to montage, the pair joined multiple negatives or prints to form a single image, here adding the atmospheric clouds and bird. Turneresque and romantic, the imagery is imaginative and technically advanced.
