From 1936-1939 Spain was engulfed in a civil war. Franco and his army were supported by the larger fascist regimes of Europe, specifically Germany and Italy. The Republican forces hoping to spark support both within Spain and around the world initiated a mighty propaganda effort and released hundreds of posters championing various aspects of their cause. This black and white photograph of a foot in an espadrille (the traditional footwear worn by Catalans) crushing a swastika, with the caption, in Catalan, "Smash Facism", is one of the purest and most symbolic images of the fight against Franco in the early years of the Spanish Civil War. It is an image that speaks by itself at a high aesthetic level. Guerra Civil p. 329 no. 553. Fotoplakate p. 28, no. 16, Art and Power p. 97, Palette 4.
